About Kathryn Studwell


Ms. Studwell has thirty years experience in community and economic development planning and analysis. She has successfully designed and implemented dozens of collaborative planning and public engagement processes related to economic development and is a skilled facilitator. Kathie works with clients in both urban and rural settings in California, the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest.

Kathie is the recipient of the American Planning Association’s National Planning Award for her leadership role in Santa Clara County’s Strategic Vision program where she facilitated the work of over 100 business and community leaders to craft economic, social and environmental strategies for the future of Silicon Valley. This process led to the formation of such organizations as Joint Venture: Silicon Valley, the Housing Action Coalition and Kids in Common.

As a nationally recognized expert in the area of industry cluster analysis and organizational development, she has worked with over twenty industry clusters in California, Arizona, Pennsylvania and the Pacific Northwest to define and strategically address their competitiveness issues. Kathie has a broad base of industry knowledge, having conducted strategic planning in such industries as: software; robotics; life sciences; biotech; plastics; aerospace; optics; semiconductor; transportation; water technology; wine; food processing and agriculture; gaming and tourism.

Ms. Studwell holds a Master’s degree in City Planning from the University of California at Berkeley where she was the recipient of the AICP Outstanding Graduating Student Award and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Idaho. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
